If you own a timber table or a dining table that you value, it’s important to use a placemat to protect its surface.
There are a variety of different placemats to choose from including cork or cork-back placemats, fabric placemats, beaded placemats and also woven vinyl placemats.
Best Placemats for protecting your table
If you are looking to protect your table top from heat marks, scratches and water stains then the best choice would be a placemat with a cork-backing. These placemats generally feature a heat-resistant print design with cork on the back. The cork provides a buffer between the plate and the table absorbing heat, cold, shock and scratches.
Cork is also the best material for coasters. A polished table top or glass table will not stand a chance against a steaming hot mug of coffee, unless of course you have a cork backed coaster.
To clean cork backed placemats, simply wipe with a moist cloth. Do not submerge the placemat into water. If you have a stubborn food item to remove (like wheet-bix) leave the lightly moistened cloth on the placemat for 10 minutes and wipe off.

How to Use Fabric Placemats:
For a grand table setting with classic appeal, its hard to go past fabric placemats accompanied by fabric napkins. Linen and cotton placemats are available in a wide range of colours, pattern and textures to suit all occasions.
How to clean fabric placemats: The best option is to clean immediately after use. Spot clean stains and soak placemats if necessary and wash as per usual. Be sure to hang out straight away and apply a light iron when dry.
If cleaning napery is not your thing, try our My Drap napery range. These cotton placemats and napkins can be washed and reused up to 6 times, or disposed of after use.
Placemats for a round table:
Round dining tables are great for small spaces, giving cosy rooms a better flow and creating more space when it is needed. They also create a more intimate feel; when all the family is sitting down to a meal everyone can interact with one another without leaning over the person beside them.
For a round dining table we find the best placemats are either round or square in shape. These shapes prevent overlapping and will perfectly fit one dinner plate. Generally these shapes also feature a cork backing with a print.
Can you use placemats with a tablecloth?
Using both placemats and a tablecloth together comes down to your preference and dining style. One benefit of using placemats on top of a tablecloth is that it gives each guest a distinctive table setting.
It is our preference that if using a fabric tablecloth you should co-ordinate with hardboard placemats or charger plates.
Can you wash placemats in a dishwasher
Hard placemats should only ever require a quick wipe over with a damp cloth. It is always a good idea to follow manufacturer guidelines. Some plastic placemats can discolour or warp in dishwashers as they reach extreme temperatures for long periods of the time with the plastic softening and then moulding into an unusual shape.
